It is a common misconception among cochlear implant users, and even some audiologists, that after implantation not all cochlear implant users need rehabilitation therapy support. “Once I get my cochlear implant, everything will go back to normal.” This is not always the case. All cochlear implant users, and their communication partners, can benefit from some rehabilitation therapy—even if they are “star performers.” Rehabilitation therapists work with you and your communication partners to ensure you get the most benefit possible out of your cochlear implant.

Research has long shown the benefits of rehabilitation after receiving a new hearing device. Rehabilitation therapists can help you not only to learn to use your device effectively but provide a support system for you and your family.

Rehabilitation therapists:

  • Work with your cochlear implant audiologist to manage the programming of your device and optimize your use of your technology. They can translate what they observe during your sessions into valuable feedback to your audiologist on needed programming changes
  • Train you and your friends and family to maximize your speech perception and communication abilities, reducing the number of “communication breakdowns” between you and your communication partners
  • Provide emotional support by counseling you and your family (2), managing your expectations for your progress with your cochlear implant, and explaining features of your technology and how it works.

Rehabilitation therapists are an invaluable resource, particularly for the new cochlear implant user.
