Active transcutaneous bone conduction option now available in Canada.

Oticon Medical Canada has launched its first active transcutaneous bone anchored hearing system (BAHS), the Sentio™ System. The Sentio System delivers the proven benefits of the Ponto™ System—and more —in a transcutaneous option. It consists of the Sentio 1 Mini, an external sound processor, and Sentio Ti Implant, placed under the skin. Held in place by magnets, Sentio provides an alternative to percutaneous bone conduction options that require skin-protruding abutments. As such, it offers an additional solution for potential wearers and supports our commitment to “freedom of choice.”

Launch event held in Quebec

We held a Sentio launch event on April 23 in Quebec. More than 40 hearing care professionals attended, including ENTs and audiologists. The event started with a reception, followed by small group workshops to experience the Sentio Ti implant and Sentio 1 Mini processor hands-on. There were also group discussions and presentations by Oticon Medical employees. Invited speakers included James Tysome, MA, PhD, FRCS (ORL-HNS), Consultant ENT and Skull Base Surgeon of Cambridge University Hospitals (remotely) and Wayne Lambert, the first US recipient of the Sentio System.

The event made such an impression that one of our ENT attendees from Montreal decided to switch his plan to implant a patient with a competitor’s bone anchored hearing system to Sentio—assuming Oticon Medical could get him the implant in time. Within 24 hours, the first Sentio surgery in Canada was conducted successfully.

Another professional attendee praised the Sentio System, stating his opinion that it would bring Oticon Medical, ENTs, and audiologists closer together while providing an effective new hearing treatment to BAHS candidates. He offered to do whatever he could to support the broader introduction of Sentio throughout Canada.
